Throughout the years, I have created several templates for my blog posts. I prefer photos without any text over my photos, really. But the fact remains: these kinds of templates are very important for Pinterest and Facebook.

When we post something on our blogs, we want visitors to pin that image. So it's important that your image is more than just a lovely photo (unless you are a stock photographer -and even then...). Having text with a photo allows you space to sell an idea, a blog post, a product, and ultimately, attract another visitor.
